The three-letter label on a bulb or panel is meant to save package space, but it can hide the most useful comparison: the Kelvin value. Treat the abbreviation as a quick category and the printed CCT as the specification.
For replacement work, note both the abbreviation and Kelvin value of the existing fitting. Mixing nominally similar names from different ranges can create visible colour differences.

Why the Kelvin value matters more than the name
There is no single retail naming boundary that every manufacturer applies identically. One catalogue may use “daylight” differently from another. Kelvin allows a more precise comparison, though small tolerances and binning differences can still be visible between batches.
CDL does not mean more lumens
Cool-looking light can appear visually crisp against white surfaces, but CDL is not a brightness grade. Use lumens for output, lux for light arriving at a surface, and watts for input power.
How to read a lighting package
Find the wattage, lumen output, CCT or colour code, cap or cut-out, voltage information and any product-specific quality declarations. Do not infer CRI, efficacy, flicker or warranty from CDL/NW/WW.
Replacing one fitting in a row
Record the brand, product code, CCT and physical dimensions. If an exact replacement is unavailable, test one fitting before changing the row. Even equal CCT labels can look different because of optics, ageing and colour tolerance.
Choosing among WW, NW and CDL
Use the room-by-room guide as a starting point, then sample. Warm white often supports relaxed ambience, neutral white is versatile for mixed-use areas, and cool daylight suits users or tasks that favour a crisp appearance. Preference is legitimate; there is no universally correct abbreviation.
Why the same abbreviation can look different
LED sources are produced within colour tolerances, and the luminaire’s diffuser, surrounding finishes and ageing can alter perceived colour. Two packages marked NW can therefore look slightly different even when their nominal CCT is the same.
For a single replacement in a repeated row, the safest route is the same model and batch where available. If that is impossible, compare a sample after dark with adjacent fittings switched on.
What the abbreviations do not tell you
CDL, NW and WW do not specify lumen output, CRI, flicker, dimming, power factor, surge protection, IP rating, lifetime or warranty. Each needs separate evidence where relevant.
They also do not tell you whether the fitting is suitable for a bedroom, kitchen or office. Application depends on light level, distribution, glare, controls and preference as well as colour appearance.
Write a clear purchase requirement
Instead of ordering “12W white light”, specify the exact product type, lumen requirement, input limit, cap or cut-out, CCT, quantity and any project quality criteria. This reduces substitutions that match wattage but change appearance or fit.
Worked example: reading two package labels
Package A says “NW, 12W, 1,200 lm, 4000K”. Package B says “CDL, 12W, 1,200 lm, 6500K”. Their declared output and input are equal; their colour appearance differs. The selection is about visual effect, not which is “more powerful”.
