The expensive panel-light mistake is often made before the light is switched on: a ceiling opening is cut from a nominal size assumption. “Round 8W” is not a cut-out specification. Keep the product or drawing on site and measure twice.
Panel lights are generally chosen for broad, clean illumination, but actual beam, diffuser and glare behaviour vary. Compare the exact product rather than treating every flat fixture as interchangeable.

Start with recessed versus surface mounting
A recessed panel needs a compatible ceiling void and a precisely sized opening. A surface panel attaches below the ceiling and can suit concrete slabs or locations where a cut-out is not possible. Conversion is not automatically possible; confirm mounting accessories and instructions.
Separate outer size from cut-out size
Outer diameter or side length describes the visible fixture. Cut-out size describes the hole. The trim must overlap the opening, while spring clips and driver need space behind it. Nominal product families do not guarantee identical cut-outs across brands or generations.
Choose light output and distribution
Use lumens to compare total output and review the beam or distribution information where available. A diffused panel can support ambient light, but spacing, height and surfaces determine the actual lux. Avoid fixed “one panel per X square feet” claims that omit these variables.
Check colour, glare and room use
Choose CCT with the room finishes and activity in mind. In a repeated grid, match colour appearance. For workspaces, also consider glare and the relationship between panels and task positions; a bright panel in the wrong sightline can be uncomfortable.
Plan driver and maintenance access
Drivers and connectors should not be buried where inspection or replacement is impossible. Follow the product installation instructions and use a qualified electrician. Confirm voltage, dimming compatibility and any ceiling insulation restrictions from the exact documentation.
Read a panel-light drawing
A useful drawing identifies the visible face, cut-out, body depth, clip span, driver and connector. Confirm whether dimensions are nominal or toleranced. On a ceiling plan, show centre lines and keep clear of framing and services.
For a surface panel, verify the mounting plate and cable entry. The visible footprint may cover an existing junction box, but only the installation instructions can confirm safe fixing and wiring space.
Commission the first installed zone
Switch on a representative group before the ceiling work is fully closed. Look for colour mismatch, diffuser shadows, flicker visible to occupants, glare on screens and dark bands between fittings. Check switching and dimming across the full intended range.
Record the model and CCT in the handover documents. Maintenance staff should know how the driver is accessed and whether a failed unit requires a complete fitting replacement.
Worked example: ordering before the false ceiling is cut
The buyer selects a recessed panel family but does not send only “8W round” to the contractor. The site pack includes model code, declared lumens, outer diameter, required cut-out, depth, driver dimensions and CCT. One trial opening is checked with the actual fitting before the remaining openings are cut.
