Map the ceiling before choosing fittings

The visible trim must cover the opening, spring clips must engage safely, and the body and driver need adequate void. Confirm all dimensions from the exact model. Do not ask an electrician to cut openings from an online photo or wattage label.
Plan beam and spacing together
Spacing cannot be derived from wattage alone. Mounting height, beam distribution, lumen output and desired uniformity interact. Narrow beams placed too far apart create scallops and dark gaps; wide beams can overlap but may create unwanted glare.
Control glare and reflections
Keep high-intensity apertures away from normal screen-reflection paths and seated sightlines. Deep recess, shielding and careful aiming can help, but performance is product-specific. A trial installation is especially valuable in living rooms and hospitality spaces.
Make drivers serviceable
Drivers and connectors should be reachable without destroying the ceiling. Grouping access where permitted, recording circuit locations and leaving safe cable length can reduce future maintenance disruption. Electrical work should follow the product instructions and applicable practice.
Use switching and layers
Separate ambient, task and accent circuits where the room benefits from different scenes. Dimming requires confirmed compatibility across driver and control; never assume every LED fitting is dimmable.
Coordinate with other ceiling services
Fans, sprinklers, smoke detectors, speakers, access panels and air-conditioning outlets all compete for ceiling space. A reflected-ceiling plan should show them together. Keep required safety clearances and avoid placing a light where a duct blocks the body or driver.
Alignment should follow architectural intent, but small shifts may be necessary for structure and services. Resolve these before cutting so the final layout does not develop random offsets.
Prepare a maintainable handover
Photograph the open ceiling before closure, label circuits, and retain the product schedule. Note cut-out, CCT, driver type and access route. This information turns a future failure from a destructive search into a planned repair.
If the fitting has replaceable components, use only compatible parts. If it is an integrated unit, plan how a visually matching replacement will be sourced.
Worked example: before the gypsum board closes
The site team fixes one sample fitting in a mock-up. They check trim coverage, spring clearance, driver access, light pattern on the wall, glare from the sofa and conflict with an AC duct. Only after approval are the remaining openings marked.
