A watt-for-watt swap is the wrong method because CFL and LED efficacy varies. The new lamp must also work inside the existing shade or enclosed fitting and produce an acceptable colour and distribution.

CFLs contain mercury and require appropriate end-of-life handling. Do not place them in ordinary waste where a local collection route is available.

Replace by lumens, not legacy watts

Read the lumen marking on the CFL or find its product data. Select an LED with suitable output for the task. Equivalence charts are approximations and cannot account for shade losses, ageing or distribution.

Check cap, dimensions and enclosure

A compact spiral CFL and an LED bulb can have different body shapes and heat paths. Confirm B22/E27 or other cap, overall length and diameter, and whether the LED is approved for the enclosure.

Consider warm-up and switching pattern

Instant full output is useful in bathrooms, stores and passages with short operating periods. For frequently switched locations, product construction and driver quality matter; avoid promising a switching life without evidence.

Compare colour and rendering

Match the Kelvin value where the appearance should remain similar. CRI is a separate property. An LED replacement with the same nominal colour name may still look different, so test one in a visible row.

Handle CFL disposal responsibly

Keep an intact spent CFL separate and follow local hazardous/e-waste collection guidance. If one breaks, follow official cleanup advice and ventilate the area. Do not use a vacuum until the applicable guidance says it is safe.

Account for ageing and shade losses

An old CFL may have depreciated, so matching its current appearance can under-light the room relative to the original design. Where possible, use the original declared lumens and reassess what the task actually needs.

Clean the shade and check yellowed diffusers. Replacing the lamp without addressing optical losses can make a capable LED appear inadequate.

Check controls and enclosed fittings

Legacy dimmers, electronic switches and enclosed decorative luminaires may not suit every LED driver. Buzzing, unstable dimming or repeated failure requires a compatibility check rather than another wattage guess.

A qualified electrician should address damaged holders and wiring. Product instructions take precedence over generic replacement advice.
